Dental arch of adult: arching organ, composed of teeth, on the edges of the maxillae. It includes the incisors, the canines, the premolars and the molars.
Incisors (4): single-rooted teeth used for biting and cutting.
Canines (2): pointed teeth between the premolars and the incisors.
Molars (6): large teeth used for grinding.
Premolars (4): teeth between the canines and the molars.
Mandible (16 teeth): bony lower part of the jaw.
Maxilla (16 teeth): bony upper part of the jaw.

Mastication

Mastication is the process by which food is mashed and crushed by teeth. It is the first step of digestion and it increases the surface area of foods to allow more efficient break down by enzymes. During the mastication process, the food is positioned between the teeth for grinding by the cheek and tongue.
